Datalec Services was engaged to install communications for Navitas this project was a relocation and expansion of the existing Sydney University to meet experienced growth in services. The installation included Panduit Cat6a U/UTP cable, OM4 Fibre optic cables and voice backbone.

One of the challenges was a working Hotel located on the adjoining wall requiring noise limitations and considerations for pathways. The other major challenge was a floor occupied by ICAC within the building that used sensitive recording electronics for witness testimonials. The older style building carried noise easily through the slab, meaning rolling a cable roll across the floor or moving a ladder was picked up by the recording instruments below. Hence the noise window was reduced to 1 hour a day to avoid Hotel and ICAC complaints.

The ICAC floor presented another issue to traverse the fibre optic cables to the upper floors, special clearance was required to install cable pathways and the fibres through the common risers. Access was cancelled last minute due to an urgent investigation on several occasions.

With such a large part of the building under construction goods delivery was an ongoing issue and truck size was limited, hence larger items such as cabinets had to be unloaded on the street and trolleyed in via the ramp and lifts.

SCOPE OF WORK

Multi-user University of approx. 20.000 square metres over 10 floors. Approximately 4,600 Panduit Cat6a U/UTP communications outlets

The project consisted of:
• Construction of 9 new Communications Rooms and 1 new Closet.
• Diverse Pathway fibre between Level 4 and all floors.
• Pathways and cable installation.

A new Main Comms Room was provided on Level 4 of the new University. All other floors are provided with a Floor Comms Room.
Navitas was provided with the following Communications Services;
• Cable Support System
• Communications Backbone
• Horizontal Cabling, Racks, Patch and Fly Leads
• Interface with Security, Access Control, CCTV
• Interface with Audio Visual System
Datalec Services dedicated members of engineers, CAD design team took on the task of the Design and Completion contractual requirements, following the consultant’s specifications.
